Here we go again!  As I reach the end of one year and the beginning of another,  I start thinking about what my New Year’s Resolution will be.  It is human nature to want to keep the good things good and improve upon what didn’t work out so well for us.   What will your New Year’s Resolution be?  Do you want to get healthy?  Lose weight?  Make more time for yourself or someone else?  Start a new hobby?

There are many people that will shoot you down for even trying another resolution.  I say “Go For IT!”    The only way you can lose is by staying exactly where you are today.  Here are a few more tips to keeping on track today, tomorrow and next week regardless of your resolution.

  • Determine your WHY  When you remember why you started something or why you want to achieve a certain goal, it is much more powerful if you understand the underlying reason WHY you are doing it.  For instance, I would like to lose 10 lbs.  I have to say big deal, I have wanted to lose 10 lbs or more for as long as I can remember.  10 lbs is this number that floats in my head.  I don’t really feel anything when I think of 10lbs.  This goal becomes much more meaningful for me when I consider my why.  As I get older and hopefully wiser, I realize how these extra pounds do not treat my body well.  I want to continue to be active and be able to jump to any task at a moments notice.   When I visualize myself lighter and healthier, I see an active and youthful woman…this gives my goal so much more purpose.
  • Set Goals:  One day, One week and One Month Goals  When we set New Year’s Resolutions, we think we have all year to get it done only to say tomorrow I will do this or that.  By setting smaller goals and milestones, we can quantify our progress and make the task at hand easier to handle.  My resolution will include daily tasks as well as weekly tasks.
  • Write it Down   When you put pen to paper, your goals become much more real.  Write a list of what you would like to accomplish every morning or better yet, the night before.  This will aid you in staying focused as well as being realist because some days will be fuller than others.   If your list is too long and you do not regularly check everything off, shorten the list to something that is doable but still stretches you.  This leads me to my next tip..
  • Be Realistic  Our goals should be achievable.   How about just being better than you were yesterday?  And if you had a great productive day yesterday, strive to match it.  Do not set yourself up for failure by creating a goal that is not likely to happen.

Will I be successful?  Who knows?  I am not as worried about failure as I am about complacency.   So let’s go ahead and make that New Year’s Resolution!
